Historic School Board Minute Books Discovered and Digitized

The Scarsdale Historical Society, in partnership with the Scarsdale School District and Scarsdale Public Library, has discovered and digitized a remarkable collection of school board minute books dating as far back as the 1860s. The books are providing valuable material for the Historical Society’s upcoming documentary on the history of the Scarsdale schools.

Meet Florence Bethell, the driving force behind the Scarsdale Equal Suffrage Club. She was a local and county suffrage leader that relentlessly campaigned for the vote and for Scarsdale women to have a stronger voice in their community. She lived in Heathcote, and is shown here with her adopted niece Janet Coker, son Frank Bethell, and nephew Frank H. Coker (far right). To learn more about the courageous Westchester women who fought for the vote, join us for “Women Rising: The Scarsdale Suffragists”, a half-hour documentary at the Scarsdale Library on December 16th at 6:15 and 7:30 PM at the Scarsdale Public Library. Following both screenings there will be a Q&A with the film’s participants. An exhibit will also be on display at the Local History Center. Drew Barrymore visited @martinesfinebakeshoppe Sunday, but she isn’t the first Barrymore to come to town! America’s “first lady of the stage” Ethel Barrymore (her great-aunt) performed at the Scarsdale Theatre in August of 1942 as part of her nationwide tour of “The Corn is Green” (after she completed the Broadway run). The theater on Garth Road (just over the Eastchester border) originally only showed motion pictures, and that summer it had been renovated to house stage shows.
